Our gap year has truly shown itself to be empowering and influential. That said, it is only the first step of a long process chosen by our volunteers: becoming active contributing members of society. The belief that these volunteers continue their work long beyond this year and are an investment in Israeli society just as we invest in them guides many decisions of the format of the program, including which projects to launch and which frameworks to enact. One initiative that shows our focus on the development of our volunteers for the long term is the insistence on continuous support, including learning days for our volunteers.
Every Tuesday, our volunteers gather from all over the country at two different centers. Because of the social-educational philosophy behind the program, the creation of a meaningful infrastructure for each gap year volunteer to grow and develop as a person and an educator, changing Israeli society from within, is a pillar. The volunteers work together to operate on a wider and more meaningful scale, embodying the ideals of the project. The program seeks to promote and embed values such as critical thinking, high social awareness, and humanistic discourse leading to thoughtful, considered action that stems from a love of and respect for our fellow man. In addition, the program invests time and resources in understanding the Israeli-Jewish identity of the gap year volunteers through a pluralistic outlook promoting tolerance that understands the importance of learning and how it can lead to action. We aspire to challenge our gap year volunteers and encourage a flexible environment with relevant content to educate but also inspire creative thinking and appeal to different interests through rotating guest lectures, continuous courses in certain fixed subjects, and tours and workshops that are not a part of a typical curriculum or routine. This enriches our volunteers with exposure to subjects that, though they are not cornerstones of the gap year, nonetheless contribute to expanding their breadth of knowledge, awakening a broader thirst for understanding the world, and feeding the soul.
Gap year volunteer
Our pre-army service volunteers are the ones on the ground acting on the Bakehila vision in the field, turning theory into practice. Each year, tens of volunteers choose to postpone their military service in order to contribute to Israeli society. They are divided up into the neighborhoods in which we operate, where they work together to embody the principles of this gap year and carry out the program mission in those locations. The volunteers experience communal living, learning to together manage a household and budget. We see the gap year as empowering and influential. That said, it is only the first step of a long process in which our gap year volunteers chose to embark upon: becoming people of society. The neighborhoods in which our gap year houses live communally and operate are Kiryat Shmona (District 1), Karmiel (Magadim neighborhood), Haifa (Neve Yosef neighborhood), Har Huma (Jerusalem), Pisgat Ze’ev (Jerusalem), and Kiryat Menachem (Jerusalem).
Professional training
We believe that professionalism is extremely important, and aim to help our gap year volunteers hone their skills and guide them to a higher calibre of work in the field. As such, the gap year includes several training sessions throughout the year. The opening seminar at the beginning of the year is geared to providing our volunteers with the initial tools for starting their work in the neighborhoods. At the seminar, the volunteers create their first bonds with their peers who will be living with them, facilitated by the program director. Mid-year, we hold a second seminar focused on providing the volunteers with professional tools to improve and leverage their work in the neighborhoods. Further, throughout the year we hold several additional training sessions and conferences for the volunteers on relevant topics to help them level up their work.
Guidance and support
While our focus is on reducing gaps for children and improving the fabric of Israeli society by using education to remove barriers, we see the gap year volunteers as an important secondary target audience of the organization. Because of this tertiary yet important goal, we greatly invest in their development, year round. Each communal house’s program manager is also responsible for accompanying their progress and providing personal, emotional, and professional support to them individually and as a group, with continuous guidance throughout the year. In addition, the volunteers are also accompanied by the coordinators within the schools, the learning and enrichment centers, and within the various frameworks in the neighborhoods where they operate. This accompaniment is curated with a clear goal – to provide them with professional tools for personal and group dynamics and growth, which helps improve the meaning of the year of service. With this guidance, the volunteers’ experiences are more meaningful, influential, fruitful, and satisfying, and they are more likely to make the best out of their year of service.
The commune
The gap year volunteer group is divided into six living communities, located in different neighborhoods in cities across Israel. Each communal living community is formed of seven to nine volunteers. Their living space is located in the neighborhood with which they work. The housemates manage matters of their entire household by themselves: from the monthly budget to shopping, cleaning, and ongoing maintenance. For the volunteers, it is a considerable challenge, as most of them are experiencing independent living alone for the first time, and in a city.

בכל שכונה יש לנו מנהלת תכניות שהיא גם מלווה את הקומונה. לכל ש”ש יש שיחה אישית אחת לשבועיים. שיחה צוותית אחת לשבועיים ושיחת קומונה פעם בשבוע. הליווי שלנו הוא צמוד והוליסטי בכדי לכוון את הש”ש שלנו לעשייה הטובה ביותר.
לכל ש”ש יש כיתה אותה היא מלווה לאורך כל היום – מתחילת השנה ועד סופה. הש”ש נמצאת עם הכיתה בשיעורים שונים בדגש על מקצועות הליבה ומסייעת למורים במה שנדרש. העבודה הינה מגוונת: פרטנית עם חניכים, עבודות קבוצתיות עם כלל הכיתה, שילוב תלמידים בשיעורים וכדומה. לכל ש”ש יש מספר חניכים אישיים איתם נעשית חונכות במשך שעה אחת בשבוע הקבועה מראש במערכת. במסגרתה ניתן להשלים פער לימודי, רגשי וחברתי.
מתנדבי שנת השירות אינם בוחרים באיזה מסגרות להתנדב והיכן. לאחר חשיבה מרובה והקשבה לבקשת הש”ש צוות העמותה יבחר לאן כל אחת ואחת ישתבצו.
משך ההתנדבות בכל מקום התנדבות שונה. עם זאת, רוב הש”ש מתחילים בכל יום את ההתנדבות בשעה 8:00 בבוקר בבית הספר, ומסיימים בין 16:00-19:00.
שבת קומונה מתרחשת אחת לשבועיים ואת אופייה קובעת כל קומונה לעצמה. זהו זמן להתגבש כקבוצה ולהכרות מעמיקה עם השכונות בהן תגורו. יש קומונות שבאופן קבוע עורכות ארוחת שישי, יש שבוחרות לטייל בשכונה, יש שמפעילות את עצמן באופן מאורגן. לאחר אמצע השנה קומונות אף מתארחות לשבתות בבתי חברי הקומונה או לחילופין בקומונות אחרות.
היציאות הן אחת לשבועיים ביום חמישי עד לחזרה בראשון בבוקר. בחמישי יוצאים רק לאחר סיום כל הפעילויות באותו היום.
בכל יום שלישי מתקיימים ימי לימוד עבור הש”ש שלנו. בימי הלימוד לומדים מגוון רחב של תחומים :פילוסופיה, מגדר, כלכלה, שיעורים על הסכסוך הישראלי- פלסטיני, צילום וכדומה. מטרת הימים האלו לאפשר לכם להרחיב אופקים וללמוד למען הנאה והתפתחות אישית.
רוב הזמן כל קומונה עוסקת בפעילויות הייחודיות לה, אבל בימי הלימוד השבועיים נפגש כל מרחב (צפון וירושלים) לזמן משותף. הגרעין כולו (צפון וירושלים יחד) נפגשים אחת לחודש בימי לימוד גרעיניים ובסמינרים: סמינר פתיחת שנה ואמצע שנה הנמשכים כל אחד מספר ימים ומתקיימים במקומות שונים בארץ.
בכל קומונה יש בין שבעה לתשעה ש“ש. לרוב, היחס הינו 1/3 בנים ו2/3 בנות – בהתאם למספר התקנים שניתנים ממשרד הביטחון ליציאה לשנת שירות.
במידת הצורך, כל אחד יוכל לקבל סיוע כלכלי.
